In 2013-2014 the Benjamin Bloom Fellowship will provide one dissertation write-up fellowship in the amount of $20,000, plus tuition, required fees, and University basic student health insurance. The fellowship seeks to support dissertation research on education that is carried out in any social sciences discipline. Ph.D. candidates in the Division of the Social Sciences are eligible. Employment, including teaching, is not permitted during the tenure of the award.


Application materials

1. SSD Dissertation Fellowship Application form, available online at: https://socialsciences.uchicago.edu/about/dean-of-students#forms.

2. Statement from the applicant (of no more than four pages, single-spaced) that discusses the dissertation project and its organization and methodology.

3. Status report and timetable for the completion of the dissertation.

4. Letter of recommendation from the dissertation advisor that addresses the expected completion date.

5. The Dean of Students will provide a transcript upon receipt of nomination packet.


Criteria for the Award

1. Appropriateness of the dissertation topic to the intent of the fellowship.

2. Outstanding record of achievement as a graduate student.

3. Prospect of completion of the dissertation by the end of the fellowship tenure.


Conditions of Award

1. Students must have been admitted to candidacy at the time of application.

2. Bloom fellows may not engage in any remunerative activity, including teaching, either on or off campus while holding the award.

3. Fellowships will be awarded for the 2013-2014 academic year.

4. Bloom fellows who do not complete their degrees within six months of completion of their fellowships are ineligible for further internal University funding from any source, including the tuition grant associated with teaching assignments.

5. For students pursuing joint programs, eligibility is through the home department only.

Comments: Scholarships support women with bachelor degrees to continue graduate studies towards an advanced degree in any field. Award renewable.Must have a 3.0 GPA and have a commitment to serving others in the African-American community. Also, must not be a member of or have a family member affiliated with Delta Sigma Theta, Inc.Competitive stipends offered.
