Comments: Several internships provide early career individuals with the opportunity to spend 12 weeks at the National Academies in Washington, DC, learning about science and technology policy and the role that scientists and engineers play in advising the nation. Each year, applicants from around the world become part of a National Academies committee, board, or unit where they are assigned to a mentor and learn about the world of science and technology policy. An immersive experience, the program is designed to broaden fellows' appreciation of employment opportunities outside academia and leave them with both a firm grasp of the important and dynamic role of science and technology in decision-making and a better understanding of the role that they can play in strengthening the science and technology enterprise for the betterment of mankind. Current graduate and professional school students and those who have completed graduate studies (degree awarded) within the last five years may apply. Stipends of $8,500 to offset living expenses during the fellowship period.

Comments:  The Academy welcomes emerging as well as established scholars, writers, and professionals who wish to engage in independent study in Berlin. Around two dozen Berlin Prizes are conferred annually. Past Berlin Prize recipients have included historians, economists, poets, art historians, journalists, legal scholars, anthropologists, musicologists, public policy experts, and writers, among others.In addition to placing a high priority on the independent work of its fellows, the Academy is in a unique position to aid fellows in establishing professional and general networks both in Berlin and beyond. Fellowships are typically awarded for an academic semester or, in some cases, for an entire academic year. Fellowship benefits include round-trip airfare, housing at the Academy, partial board, and a stipend of $5,000 per month. Fellowships are restricted to candidates who are based permanently in the US (US citizenship is not required and American expatriates are not eligible.) Candidates in academic disciplines must have completed a doctorate at the time of application.

Program seeks to promote intellectual cooperation between Japanese and American academic and professional communities.Must hold a PhD or have attained an equivalent level of professional experience. Fellows are expected to affiliate with an American or Japanese institution appropriate to their research aims. Previous language training is not a prerequisite.Flexible support provided for up to 12 months.
