Comments: Several internships provide early career individuals with the opportunity to spend 12 weeks at the National Academies in Washington, DC, learning about science and technology policy and the role that scientists and engineers play in advising the nation. Each year, applicants from around the world become part of a National Academies committee, board, or unit where they are assigned to a mentor and learn about the world of science and technology policy. An immersive experience, the program is designed to broaden fellows' appreciation of employment opportunities outside academia and leave them with both a firm grasp of the important and dynamic role of science and technology in decision-making and a better understanding of the role that they can play in strengthening the science and technology enterprise for the betterment of mankind. Current graduate and professional school students and those who have completed graduate studies (degree awarded) within the last five years may apply. Stipends of $8,500 to offset living expenses during the fellowship period.

Comments: The Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) offers full-time legislative and public policy fellowships in Washington, D.C. Benefits: Fellowship placement in a Congressional office, Federal agency, or non-profit organization, Competitive stipends and benefits offered to all fellows. Minimum Requirements to Apply for the 2011-2012 APAICS Fellowship Program: Bachelor's degree or graduate degree from an accredited educational institution; Minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale); U.S. citizenship or legal permanent residency by September 1, 2011.

Comments: CBO summer internships provide excellent opportunities to experience and observe the budget process and policymaking at the federal level. The internships are located in Washington, D.C. They normally last 10 weeks and include compensation based on academic level and work experience. In addition to learning on the job, CBO interns participate in an educational program that includes briefings on the agency's role in the budget process. Ideal candidates for CBO internships are pursuing graduate academic programs in economics, public policy, health policy, financial management, mathematics, statistics, or engineering.

Program Description
: Approximately 40 provide beginning graduate students the opportunity to learn about the Smithsonian through direct experience in research or museum-related projects under the supervision of staff members at the Institution's many museums, research institutes and offices. Internships are full-time (40 hours per week), ten week appointments available during the summer, fall, or spring.

Interns work full-time and gain firsthand knowledge of decision-making events and government processes. The program seeks to give Native American students an opportunity to learn about the federal government from the inside.Open to college juniors and seniors, graduate students, recent graduate from a tribal or four-year college and law students. Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Must be an enrolled member of Native American tribe. Stipend of $1,200 plus airfare, lodging, and daily allowance.
