Blakemore Freeman Fellowships are awarded for one year of advanced level language study in East or Southeast Asia in approved language programs.
To be eligible for a Blakemore Freeman Fellowship, an applicant must:

Be pursuing an academic, professional or business career that involves the regular use of a modern East or Southeast Asian language

Have a college undergraduate degree

Be at or near an advanced level in the language as defined in the grant guidelines (Minimum requirement is 3 years of study of the language at college level or equivalent fluency)

Able to devote oneself exclusively to full-time language study during the term of the grant. Grants are not made for part-time study or research.

Comments: Scholarships are awarded to students pursuing full-time study at Canadian or US colleges or universities. There are no restrictions as to field of study, but applicants must have attained at least sophomore standing (10 full-course credits for Canadians) at the time of application. As a rule, applicants must be citizens of Canada or the US. International students may be eligible to apply if they have been full-time students at an American or Canadian university for at least one year at the time of application. Applicants must have completed a minimum of four semesters of college German (or have obtained an equivalent level of language proficiency elsewhere) in order to be able to participate in group projects and follow lectures in German. Applicants will be assessed on the basis of their academic record and statements of projected academic and professional future. Demonstrated interest in Germany and Europe and/or the need to learn the German language for professional or academic purposes will also be taken into consideration.
Scholarships are available for courses lasting a minimum of three weeks. The scholarship is approximately €850, which covers tuition, room and board in whole or in part. Accommodations are arranged by the host institution. In addition, DAAD will provide an international travel subsidy of €300-450. Scholarship recipients are expected to devote their full attention to the course and may not concurrently undertake individual research. A written report is requested within four weeks of the end of the course.

The Walter J. Jensen Fellowship is awarded for at least six months of study in France. The purpose of the award is to help educators and researchers improve education in standard French language, literature and culture and in the study of standard French in the United States. The fellowship is awarded annually and has a stipend of at least $10,000. Phi Beta Kappa will also cover a single round-trip, economy-class ticket for the recipient to travel to France; some additional support may be available to those with dependents.
Candidates must be U.S. citizens under the age of 40 who
can demonstrate their career does or will involve active use of the
French language. They must have earned a bachelor's degree from an
accredited four-year institution with a 3.0 minimum GPA in French
language and literature as a major. They must demonstrate superior
competence in French, according to the standards established by the
American Association of Teachers of French.

Comments: This fellowship is awarded to researchers and graduate students in Korean Studies and other persons professionally engaged in Korea-related activities who wish to have an opportunity to immerse themselves in Korean language by participating in a Korean language program at a university in Korea.
Grant pays:

- PhD candidates and higher: 1,200,000 won

Comments: Nationality: Applicant must have the nationality of a country which has diplomatic relations with the Japanese government. This applies at such times to stateless persons, too. Applicant who has Japanese nationality at the time of application will not be eligible. Applicant must have been born on or after April 2,1977. Applicant must have BA or equivalent. Must be willing to study Japanese language and receive instruction in it. An essential prerequisite is that applicants be in good physical and mental health. Must contact a Japanese professor and obtain a letter of acceptance from a Japanese university.Allowance: Under the fiscal 2011 budget, each grantee will be provided monthly with 150,000 yen (Research Student course),
152,000 yen (students enrolled in a Master's program or a professional degree program), or 153,000 yen (students enrolled in a doctoral program) (an additional monthly stipend of 2,000 or 3,000 yen may be provided to those undertaking study or research in specially designated regions).

Comments: For summer 2011, the American Research Institute in Turkey will offer fellowships for up to 15 advanced students for participation in the summer program in intensive advanced Turkish language at Bogaziçi University* in Istanbul. This intensive program offers the equivalent of one full academic year of study in Turkish at the college level. The fellowships cover round-trip airfare to Istanbul, application and tuition fees, and a maintenance stipend. Comments: Boren Fellowships provide American graduate students, both at the master's and the doctoral level, with the resources and encouragement they need to acquire skills and experiences in areas of the world critical to the future security of our nation, in exchange for their commitment to seek work in the federal government. Boren Fellowships provide support for overseas or domestic study, or a combination of both. The maximum level of support for a combined overseas and domestic program is $30,000 over 24 months. Boren Fellowships are awarded with preference for countries, languages, and fields of study critical to U.S. national security.
