Comments: The Academy Scholars Program identifies and supports outstanding scholars at the start of their careers whose work combines disciplinary excellence in the social sciences (including history and law) with a command of the language, history, or culture of non-Western countries or regions.
Academy Scholars are appointed for 2 years by the Harvard Academy for
International and Area Studies and are provided time, guidance, and
access to Harvard facilities. The competition for these awards is open only to recent Ph.D. (or
comparable professional school degree) recipients and doctoral
candidates. Those still pursuing a Ph.D. should have completed their
routine training and be well along in the writing of their theses before
becoming Scholars; those in possession of a Ph.D. longer than 3 years
are ineligible. Post-doctoral Scholars will receive an annual stipend of $65,000, and
pre-doctoral Scholars will receive an annual stipend of $31,000. This
stipend is supplemented by funding for conference and research travel,
research assistants, and health insurance coverage. Some teaching is
permitted but not required.

Comments: The Michigan Society of Fellows, under the auspices of the Rackham Graduate School, was established in 1970 with endowment grants from the Ford Foundation and the Horace H. and Mary Rackham Funds. The most distinctive aspect of the Society is its multidisciplinary emphasis. Each year the Society selects four outstanding applicants for appointment to three-year fellowships in the social, physical, and life sciences, and in the professional schools. In 2007, the Mellon Foundation awarded a grant to add four Mellon Fellows annually in the humanities, expanding the number of fellowships awarded each year from four to eight.
The Society invites applications from qualified candidates at the beginning of their academic careers, having received the Ph.D. or comparable professional or artistic degree between June 1, 20011 and September 1, 2014. Applications from degree candidates and recipients of the Ph.D. from the University of Michigan will not be considered. Non-US citizens may apply.

Comments: The Academy welcomes emerging as well as established scholars, writers, and professionals who wish to engage in independent study in Berlin. Around two dozen Berlin Prizes are conferred annually. Past Berlin Prize recipients have included historians, economists, poets, art historians, journalists, legal scholars, anthropologists, musicologists, public policy experts, and writers, among others. In addition to placing a high priority on the independent work of its fellows, the Academy is in a unique position to aid fellows in establishing professional and general networks both in Berlin and beyond. Fellowships are typically awarded for an academic semester or, in some cases, for an entire academic year. Fellowship benefits include round-trip airfare, housing at the Academy, partial board, and a stipend of $5,000 per month. Fellowships are restricted to candidates who are based permanently in the US (US citizenship is not required and American expatriates are not eligible.) Candidates in academic disciplines must have completed a doctorate at the time of application.
